I am really excited to kick off a health & wellness business venture I have committed myself to as an Independent Distributor for Young Living Essential Oils.

Essential oils have played a prominent role in everyday life throughout history. With more than 200 references to aromatics, incense and ointments throughout the Bible, essential oils are said to have been used for anointing and healing the sick. Today, essential oils are used for aromatherapy, massage therapy, emotional health, personal care, nutritional supplements, household solutions and much more.

I heard about Young Living from a friend of mine in September of 2009 and have spent several months researching the products and trying them out. Before committing myself, I wanted to make sure this was something that I believed in and that it was for real. My friend spoke very highly of NingXia Red, Young Living's nutrient infusion drink, which is what initially sparked my interest. Everything she said it did, I REALLY needed (added ENEGY without the crash, better FOCUS, improved EYE HEALTH, WEIGHT LOSS and IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT). It contains no harsh stimulants and it is good for your entire body PLUS, research indicates that it may even inhibit tumor growth. The alcoholic extract of the wolfberry fruits inhibited tumor growth in mice by 58% and the protein of wolfberry displayed an insulin like action that was effective in promoting fat decomposition and reducing blood sugar. Research also shows that it lowered the total and LDL cholesterol levels in the blood and helped strengthen the immune system while building muscles and burning body fat.

The cast finally came off back on December 1st. You probably can't tell but he was pretty excited (as he tried to shield his eyes from the flying sawdust like particles). Is it a sweaty little boy thing or do all casts stink that bad?

This is what advanced Actinic Keratosis (a pre-cancerous skin condition) looks like.

It first appeared about 3 years ago as a freckle or age spot. Recently it got bigger, changed shape and texture so I had it checked out by the dermatologist. First time in my life even seeing a Dermatologist. After the biopsy results confirmed the Dr's. suspicions, it was removed and is now healing up but a slight scare will remain there forever. Guess that's the price you pay for a lifetime in the sun and tanning beds with fair skin and minimal sunscreen. Probably doesn't help my odds much when melanoma runs in my family. Effective immediately, I will be wearing sunscreen DAILY and seeing the dermatologist for annual check ups. As far as that golden sun kissed look...well, I guess it's time to just embrace the fact that white is alright, ha ha. Or maybe instead of supporting my local tanning salon, it's time to support the bronzing powder industry.

California Christmas

okay, i would much prefer a cold white christmas to our usual warm and sunny weather but how cool is this? a sand castle christmas tree.

so i guess if i can't have the snow and cold weather then sunny skies and 60-70 degree temps. is really not that bad. i do enjoy not having to deal with boots and winter jackets.

Black Bean Chili

I just can't get into foods like chili or soup when it's hot outside so I love this time of year when the weather gets cool and we can enjoy cozy comfort foods like this. Last night at my Bunco group we had black bean chili and it was SO good that I was inspired today to find a black bean chili recipe and make it.

1 pound of lean ground beef

1 onion

3 garlic cloves

2 (15 oz.) cans black beans

1 (28 oz.) can tomato puree

1 (15 oz.) can of corn, drained

1 Tbsp. chili powder

1 Tsp. cumin

1/2 Tsp. ground pepper

Brown meat & drain. Add onion and garlic, saute until soft, about 5 minutes. Add beans (undrained), tomato puree, corn, chili powder, cumin & pepper. Bring to boil, cover and lower heat; simmer gently for at least 10 minutes until thoroughly heated. Makes 6 servings of warm yummy goodness.

Next time, I'm going to throw a pot roast in the crock pot and make this recipe without the ground beef and then pour it over the pot roast to cook all day long. What would you call that...black bean pot roast chili? The following is a little promotional of Ryan trying to convince you just HOW GREAT sour cream and shredded cheese is on top of a bowl of chili. Or...separately. Although I AM a sour cream fan, eating it by the spoonful straight out of the container is a little, well....YUCK, don't ya think?

Could the kid pick a messier way to enjoy cheese? Thank God I have a good handheld mini vacuum.

No Guts No Glory

Who breaks their ELBOW of all things? Is it just me or does Noah almost look a little proud about this? I don't want to know how many trips we've made to doctors offices and the hospital this past year but it's a LOT. We are really getting close to getting that wing named after us at the hospital.
Noah took a helmet to the elbow at his playoff game on October 31st. At halftime he said to Scott, "check out this bump, I think a helmet hit me...that's weird huh?". Then he goes back on the field and continues to play like an animal. It was a little swollen but seemed to improve a lot after icing it. Two days later in P.E. class he fell on the SAME elbow (we have SOME luck) and heard a POP. After an entire day spent between the Dr.'s office and getting x-rays, we were told, "Good news, no fracture". Noah was STILL in excruciating pain and Ibuprofen and Motrin were doing nothing for him so today we went to an Orthopedic specialist and guess what? It IS fractured! The kid has been walking around with a broken elbow for a week.

Cutest costume ever for a 2 year old, right? I loved the fact that he would be the actual size of a garden gnome. Now THAT would be funny! Well, let me tell ya, it WASN'T...funny. At all. The kid who is tough as nails and totally fearless was scared out of his own skin of this costume. He REFUSED to even go near the hat/beard combo. HELLO, that's pretty much what makes the costume. Bought the costume and couldn't get him to suit up long enough to get even ONE picture. I did get the "outfit" on him after finally convincing him that it was NOT a costume but just a warm outfit with fun slippers. Something about the word "costume" freaked him out. I'm sure that his Dad and brother's COSTUMES had nothing to do with his fear.

Then it hit me. A FOOTBALL PLAYER! He LOVES football. LOVES wearing Noah's pads and running around the house like a little stud. After all, this IS the kid who said TOUCHDOWN before he said Mommy. Why didn't I think of this BEFORE I bought that stupid gnome costume? That's what I get for wanting him to be what I want him to be rather than what HE wants to be.

Scott and Noah dressed up on our way out to go trick or treating. Scott dresses up with Noah every year. So remember, when I talk about "my boys" I don't always just mean Noah and Ryan.Scott reeeeally enjoyed scaring the older kids during trick or treat. He would just stand there and stare and they would scream and freak out. It's a little scary actually how he really gets into his role. Should I be concerned about this?

The last couple of years Noah just wears a scary mask, torn clothing and squirts fake blood all over himself. I'm not complaining though, it's cheap, easy and hassle free. Let's hope his Christmas list has those same frugal qualities.

One minute he was re-arranging the diapers in the basket under the changing table. The next, he's stuck ON one of the shelves. How does this stuff happen so fast? He was having so much fun messing up the diapers...until I suddenly heard major freak out mode kind of screaming. Is it wrong that I made him suffer for 30 more seconds while I ran and grabbed the camera? Well he hasn't done THAT again.

6th Grade Camp

Here are some pictures of Noah's much anticipated 6th grade camp (outdoor ed.) trip to Camp Fox up in Santa Ysabel which is about 60 miles away from where we live. He had a fantastic time and came home full of stories about all of his great adventures at camp. It sure was weird without him around. He left on Monday, October 19th and returned on Friday, October 23rd.

Noah's school is pretty big so they have it divided up into four "houses". Fire House, Earth House, Wind House and Water House. Noah is in Fire House and Fire House went to Camp Fox while the other 3 houses went to Camp Cuyamaca. Fire House is the biggest house...and the best, according to Noah.

Noah is showing how small his bags are compared to some of the other kids. We packed him pretty light while some of the other kids had enough luggage for a 2 week European vacation.

During a hike, Noah found this bat in a cave. You'd never know it by this picture because the flash made it seem brighter than it was but it was actually pretty dark inside of the cave. This is a Townsends Big Eared Bat.

Arriving back at school on Friday, October 23rd. Noah got off the bus feeling sick but it was short lived...just a little sick from the long bus ride home in the heat.

Football Means "Life"

Noah's first season of tackle football is officially over but something tells me we are just getting started. Despite his team's losing record, Noah had a really good season. He really should have been on the jr. pee wee team but they were already full so he had to play up on the pee wee team. He was also one of the smallest and youngest boys on the team. It was his first time ever playing tackle football and he was a starting middle linebacker and one of the team captains. He played very aggressively and the coaches told us many different times throughout the season, "that boy has HEART". He loves the game like you just cannot imagine.

The pee wee Warriors played their last game of the season on Halloween. It was also their first PLAYOFF game. They only won 1 game all season, yet, they made it to the playoffs. Turns out, 3 other teams in their division didn't even win 1 game which lowered the bar and, amazingly, put our Warriors in the running. Sadly but not surprisingly, they lost their first playoff game. After the many injuries our boys sustained along with their bruised self esteems, it was time to be done. All of us moms are relieved to know that at least now maybe we can catch a little break from visits to the emergency room for a while.

Just before their playoff game, the coach said "Noah, what does football mean?"
With zero hesitation or thought and in a very serious voice, Noah said "Life". Coach looked at Scott in awe and said, "I couldn't ask for a more perfect answer." So ya see, it was an interesting season filled with, yes, many injuries and disappointments but also lots of goosebumps and very proud mom and dad kind of moments too.

We are already looking forward to next season. The coaches asked Scott to help out for the last couple games and it was really neat to see him pumping the boys up and giving them pointers. Scott really knows a lot about the game and is great with the boys. So, after the playoff game, the coaches asked Scott to join them next year on the field as one of the coaches. Yaaaaaay Scott!!! Hmmm, maybe I should volunteer to help coach the cheerleaders next year? Juuuuuust kidding. Or am I?

The first couple of pictures aren't the best quality. I took a picture of a picture and just could not get it to come out very good. After many attempts, I decided this was good enough. For those out of state grandparents that follow our blog, I'll soon be sending you a much better quality individual shot of Noah.

This is what happens when afternoon football games overlap with nap time. Why am I just now noticing that strange wet spot on the sidewalk next to him?

This is Noah in the emergency room after being taken by ambulance from one of his games this season. He went in for an incredible hit and then got hit from behind at the same time. The game was stopped for 10-15 minutes as he was layed out flat on the field while coaches and referees surrounded him and both teams took a knee. This was only our 3rd trip to the E.R. in the past year (once for Ryan, twice for Noah). One more trip and I expect to see a wing named after us, ha ha. He pulled a ligament in his back (they thought he might have torn a ligament but that was not the case). He was BACK (get it?) in full swing within just a few days. While we waited for the x-ray results I tried to convince Noah to focus on his golf game in lieu of football.

Me: Noah, are you SURE you really want to do this?

Noah: YES

Me: This could be the first of many injuries and you could be out for the rest of the season.

Noah: If that Dr. comes back in here and tells me I am out for the season I am STILL going to play. I've GOT to play.

Me: What if next time it's even worse and you need surgery or are seriously injured?

Noah: It's like this, mom. I could be hurt in a car accident or doing something stupid or I could be hurt playing football. I would rather be hurt doing something that I love. It's worth it, Mom.

The first couple games of the season, his jersey said Fleming on the back. Noah's last name is legally Fleming and that's what he goes by but Scott's (Noah's step dad) last name is Seubert and so is his little brother's and mine but Noah was very passionate about having Seubert on his jersey for football. So, Noah took it upon himself to talk to his coach about this and they re-did his jersey for him with Seubert. So, in case you noticed or were wondering why some pictures had Fleming on the jersey while others had Seubert, that's why.

FUN AT THE PARK

There's a cute little neighborhood park just down the street where Ryan and I like to go a couple days a week after dropping Noah off at school in the morning. Sometime we meet friends there and other times, we have the whole place to ourselves. Either way, it's ALWAYS fun.

We usually bring a ball to kick around but Ryan found some sticks to double as a baseball bat/golf club.

The weather was so perfect, about 68 degrees, sunny and a nice breeze.

Taking a little rest before walking back up the hill to our home. The hair is a little long. He obviously needs a haircut but I have a bad habit of putting off haircuts for this one as loooooooong as possible because he throws an unbelievable fit every time and I just hate being the mom with THAT kid. The one that everyone seems to be looking at and thinking, what is WRONG with your kid, lady? About the time people start referring to him as a HER I know it's time.

Is it THAT obvious that I am officially a stay at home mom now??? August 31st was my last day at work. Correction, it was my last day working outside of the home. I'm STILL working. Being a stay at home mom really is a tough gig. There's always so much to do and the days just fly by but there is no question that this is where I need to be right now and I am loving it!

Noah had a friend over the other day and I had some Berry Blue flavored jello in the fridge that I wanted to get rid of so...I got a little creative and decided to make it fun. I used some fancy ice cream dishes that were once my Grandma's and just layered jello and whipped cream and topped it off with some sprinklers that I've had forever (they don't go bad, right?). It was a hit. Score! Note: should probably mention that it was actually Scott's idea to surprise them and do something fun in the "fancy ice cream dishes". I guess the fact that we took the time to take pictures and even post on the blog says that we were pretty impressed with ourselves, ha ha.

First Day of School...MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!

It's hard to imagine that I no longer have a child in elementary school. It's off to middle school for Noah...Wow!!! Can that be right? Even more of a WOW is the fact that I still have one yet to even enter elementary school.

After dropping off Noah at school on the first day this year, I'm sad to say that it's no longer "cool" for him to hold my hand or hug & kiss me goodbye in public (yep, I tried). This year, he didn't need me to walk with him to his class on the first day or line up on the playground with him like they did in elementary school so he could show me off to his friends. That's okay though because he still loves to cuddle up with me on the couch at home and SOMETIMES, albeit rare, even asks me to lay down with him before he goes to bed. Oh and I also still get at least one hug and kiss from him every day (in the privacy of our own home, of course). So, even if he's no longer into the PUBLIC displays of affection with mom, I know what's up and I'm just happy with whatever I can get.

I had to include a separate post of the flowers around our place. They are all so pretty right now. Reminds me of how much I love Spring, especially here in San Diego. It's hard to imagine that there's places in the country where it is snowing right now.

Easter Sunday 2009

What a beautiful Easter this year! The weather was perfect. Not too hot and not cold at all. Sun was shining and spring flowers were all out in full bloom. Who knows WHERE we'll eventually end up but I know this...it's pretty hard to beat San Diego sometimes.

Easter was at our place this year. My mom came down from Irvine for the day and so did my sister, Amy and her crew. I set up a food table outside for the kids (wish I would have thought to get a picture of it...dang it!), Scott and Moe (my sister's boyfriend) ate on the couch while watching The Masters...biggest day in golf all year and me and my Mom and sister enjoyed our dinner at the table while Ryan napped. Incredible that I got to enjoy the ENTIRE meal while he slept. Usually doesn't work out that way for me. We ate at about 1:30 p.m. and a couple hours later (AFTER The Masters...of course), Scott took the kids swimming. It was a perfect day for the pool. Everybody left by about 5:00 p.m. then Scott and Noah headed out for a quick round of golf at one of our local golf courses. Ryan went down for another nap and I enjoyed enjoyed some peace and tranquility and reflected on the REAL reason why we celebrate Easter. How awesome!

Mindless Entertainment

This video clip was actually taken a few months ago now but I just never got around to posting it. One afternoon, out of the blue, Ryan became mesmerized with the effect of his slobbery mouth on the glass coffee table while blowing. I was so fortunate to get this angle from underneath the table. Is it me or does he look like a little beaver? Oh, and I should mention that the comment made by my husband at the end of the video clip...disregard. He's referncing me snoring...which never EVER happens so I don't know WHAT he was thinking (the silly).

I finally get my way on the lights. All white this year. I love it. Scott loves the multi-colored lights but this year he agreed to let me have my all white lights. Guess what? He lllllllloves it!

Scott and Noah get an A+ this year for the Christmas tree. It's perfect. Perfect size. Perfect shape. So far, Ryan's only thrown a COUPLE of items into the tree.

Don't let this precious little face fool you. He is SO READY to yank those candy canes right out of the ground. Ahhh, my sweet angel.

Christmas lights in and around our back patio. The picture really does it NO justice. Scott worked REALLY hard on this little project. I kept telling him, "that's good enough, just keep it simple". He kept saying, "just a little bit more, it's for the kids". Ha! The kids. Rrrrrrrrrriight, for the kids (wink, wink).

Barbecued Walnuts

Okay, I'm not much of a walnut fan but these are GOOD! The last couple of years I made them to have around the house for a snack during the holidays and I also made a bunch to give out as gifts. So, if you're looking for something inexpensive to make and tasty to share here they are:

2 tbsp. butter
1/4 cup Worcestershire sause
1 tbsb. ketchup
2 dashes Tabasco sauce (or more if you like)
4 cups walnut halves (I buy a large bag at Costco and make a bunch)
cooking oil spray
Seasoned salt, such as Lawry's brand, to taste

Preheat over to 400 degrees. Place the butter in a medium-size microwave safe mixing bowl and microwave, on high and covered with paper towel, until melted, about 45 seconds.
Remove the bowl from microwave and stir in the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup and Tabasco sauce. Add the walnuts and stir until they are well-coated.
Spray a 9 x 13 inch glass baking dish with cooking oil spray, and apread the walnuts evenly in the dish. Bake, uncovered, and stirring every 5 minutes, until lightly toasted, about 20 minutes.
Remove pan from oven and pour nuts out onto 2 layers of paper towels. Sprinkle with seasoning salt. Cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes and store in an airtight jar or tin for up to 3 weeks at room temperature.

Start to finish: 5 minutes preparation, 20 minutes baking, 20 minutes cooling.

Per tbsp: 45 calories, 4 g fat, 1 mg. cholesterol, 1 g protein, 1 g carbohydrate, trace amount dietary fiber, 16 mg sodium.

Halloween 2008 - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Scott can never resist dressing up with the kids for trick or treat. I caught him after he already started to get out of his costume but he was wearing a leisure suit with fake blood all over it and carried a baseball bat. He took Noah and a couple of his friends trick or treating dressed like that. If their parents don't let them hang out with Noah anymore we'll know why.

Noah was a zombie. Gone are the superhero years for this one...it's all about the gore now.

CULTURE FAIR

Every year at Noah's school, the entire 5th grade participates in a culture board project. It is VERY time consuming but a lot of fun at the same time. Noah had to pick one particular country from his heritage to do his report on. He had to research many things like the where the country is, the population, type of government, currency, meaning of their flag, what kind of food they eat...and all kinds of other stuff. On September 30th they had this huge Culture Fair in the auditorium where each 5th grader set up their board. They also had to bring samples of food from their country. Noah chose Saint Martin in the French West Indes, which is where his Dad was born and lived until the age of 7 or 8. I made red beans and rice with chunks of beef kielbasa sausage in it and brought a bunch of passion fruit juice. Plus, Noah remembers his Dad snacking on coconut a lot so he REALLY wanted me to bring coconut. Oh my GOSH is it ever hard to get into a coconut. Since Scott's family lived in Hawaii for a while, he was very helpful. So we cut up chunks of coconut for people visiting his booth as well. It was quite the spread and it was so neat to see ALL the kids culture boards and sample the variety of foods from across the world. Oh, and I should mention, the kids were also encouraged to dress in native clothing for the event. Noah wore a bright tropical shirt with shorts and flip flops and really REALLY wanted to also bring a radio for background music as well (Reggae...of COURSE). It was a lot of fun! Ryan stayed home with Scott and Noah and I attended the Culture Fair together, which was a nice night OUT for just the two of us.

We decided to sign Noah up for winter ball this year. Well actually, I should say NOAH decided he was ready to go back to baseball. It's been 2 years since he's played in Little League. He took a break and, instead, played a season of flag football. He still loves football and if I can just brag about my kid a LITTLE bit I have to say he really is a natural. Truth is, I think he has more friends at school in Little League than he does in football so he decided to play Winter Ball. After not having played for 2 years he got back into the "swing" of things quite nicely. He pitches and also plays first base.

For those of you who have been wondering and asking about Ryan's cast, here's what happened. On July 11th (yes, I know, this is a very long over due post) we were in the middle of preparing to leave for a long week-end getaway to San Francisco to rendevous with Scott's parents for the week-end (they were flying in from St. Louis). Scott and Noah were at the store getting some last minute items for our trip and I was packing while Ryan was about 3 feet away from me in the dining room. He was learning to walk at the time but not quite yet mobile. I had a folding chair in my dining room and he grabbed a hold of it just right and it instantly collapsed, severing the tip of his left ring finger. It was the most horrifying thing ever. I thought maybe he bit his lip or tongue but could not see exactly where all the blood was coming from. I finally saw his little finger tip just dangling by a mere thread. So, after a 911 call, ambulance ride to the hospital and pretty much an entire week-end in and out of the emergency room and Children's Hospital, we were all sooooo EXHAUSTED. Needless to say, the vacation was cancelled. Poor little Ryan, he was such a trooper too. The morning after he was already crawling all over the place. He was so rough with his wounded hand it hurt US to watch him get around. Bottom line, he's just one tough little kid. As you can see in the picture they ended up putting a cast on his entire arm for 2 reasons. #1 to protect his finger from being re-injured and so it could just heal and #2, the bone was slightly exposed and it was important to protect it from any kind of infection. They ended up re-attaching his finger tip in an effort to protect the bone from infection but said that his finger tip would turn black and eventually just fall off. Meanwhile, new fresh skin would re-generate from under neath. Sure enough, he got his cast off 3 weeks later and about a week after that the blackened tip that remained fell off during a nap and his finger now looks almost normal. It's amazing how they heal when they are so young. I have better pictures on my phone that I'll have to transfer over and post so you can better visualize what I'm talking about.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NOAH

At Noah's special request, I lined up with him and his class this morning on the playground before school. I had Ryan with me (he ALMOST stole the show from Noah). I brought 2 of those large containers of fresh baked cookies from Costco and juice for the class. Noah was so proud and excited to have both Ryan and me there with him at school. Won't be long and it won't be so cool to have your mom walk you to your classroom so for now, I'm going with it. For Noah's birthday dinner he got to pick anything he wanted (any restuarant or anything for me to cook for him at home...his choice). He chose steak, complete with baked potatoes with cheese sauce and bacon bits on top. Oh my gosh the steaks were soooo good. We got some ribeyes from Costco and they were huge. Noah ate ALMOST one entire steak all by himeself. After dinner he opened some presents and had cake. Not just any ole cake though. I surprised him with an ice cream cake from Cold Stone (cookie dough delirium). It had yellow cake and the ice cream portion was filled with gobs of cookie dough, topped off with some white frosting, chocolate shavings and a few gobs of cookie dough on top as well. Delish!

NOW...

The day started out with Noah anxious to greet Ryan as soon as he woke up. He wanted to be the first to tell Ryan Happy Birthday. The boys got to hang out on the couch for a while and watch some cartoons before we left for school/daycare/work. Scott and I each worked a half day today so we could spend the afternoon with Ryan on his special day. Of course, he didn't know it was his special day but it meant a lot to US to spend extra time with him today. When Noah got home from school, we took the boys swimming then got some frozen yogurt. Ryan goes CRAZY for frozen yogurt. After nap time and dinner Ryan opened a present that came in the mail for him today (GREAT timing Uncle Rob & Aunt Kris...he loves the music player and even bounces to the music). The grand finale was, of course, CAKE!!! What a mess that was but it comes with the territory.

Below is a recent video clip Scott made for Ryan (about to turn 1 on May 8th). Scott is so good at this stuff and, as you'll see, pretty artistic the way he puts it all together.

When you watch it though, you have to listen closely to the music at the same time. If you click on our other YouTube videos there's a couple others he's done also and I'm sure there will be more soon...he's always working on something. The one titled "Noah" is really something special. Scott made it for Noah before Ryan was born and then later went in and revised it to include pictures of Ryan after he was born. When I was pregnant with Ryan, Noah started asking questions about the baby's skin color and if he would be brown like him. Noah was a little unsure at the time about how it would be to have a white brother while he himself is brown. We explained that he would be white but that it wouldn't matter because he'll be his brother all the same and once he sees him, he'll love him so much that it'll kind of be like he's color blind because he won't see him as being a different skin color from him. He'll just be...his brother. Anyway, the title of the song that accompanies Scott's video clip titled "Noah" is Color Blind and if you listen to the words while you watch it, I guarantee you'll get goose bumps at the very least but it may possibly even bring a lump to your throat or tears to your eyes.

What a hot week-end this was! With temperatures in the 90's we went to the pool on Saturday AND Sunday. We just love our pool here. It is so pretty and clean with flowers all over the place, hardly anybody is ever there and it's only about 50 feet away from our front door. Love it!!! As you can see, both of the boys absolutely love the water. Ryan especially loves floating around the pool in his little inflatable crab. Noah helped him out a bit at times and towed him around with his boogey board. It was lots of fun. My mom came down from Orange County on Saturday so we relaxed at a table in the shade, enjoyed something COLD to drink while snacking on tortilla chips and freshly made guacamole as we watched the fish, I mean BOYS, swim in the pool. Ahhhhhh, so nice and relaxing.

Ethnic Dance ~ February 27th

Every year Noah's school has an ethnic dance performance. They study a different culture and learn a native dance to perform in an evening recital for family and friends. This year the continent they are studying is Australia. Noah was VERY disappointed because he was in the back row (really wanted to be front and center...I know, I know, he's really shy...we do try to get him to loosen up and relax in front of crowds, ha ha). Unfortunately, our pictures from inside the auditorium didn't turn out too good as it was very dark except for the lights on the stage but we did get these shots taken afterwards. Noah and his friend Tyler had already taken off part of their costume and his friend Justin (blue shirt) was performing the following night with his class so that's why he wasn't matching.

Valentine's Day

I REALLY wish I had captured some photos to go along with this post but, unfortunately, I was so consumed in the moment that I didn't even think about it.

On Valentine's Day I woke up a little earlier than normal to throw a cake in the oven for Scott and Noah. It smelled so delicious while it was baking...a yellow cake, the kind with the pudding in the mix. Yum! I planned to frost and decorate it for them when I came home from work that night. As luck would have it, it was baked to perfection...couldn't have been better (how often does THAT happen?). As I approached the front door after work there was a large heart shaped valentine taped to the door that read "We Love You Mom". I came inside to the movie Titanic playing (we love that movie). Candles were lit all over the dining room table along with several little heart shaped notes from Scott and, of course, a card. Noah went outside and handpicked some really pretty flowers for me and they were proudly displayed in what Scott and Noah thought was a little vase but in actuality it was a cruet (ya know, the kind that you mix oil and vinegar with the seasoning packets for salad dressing?). Best of all, in the center of the table, was a plate filled with chocolate covered strawberries. About a week before Valentine's day, Scott and I agreed to make it simple and not spend a lot of $ on each other. I told him I would be perfectly happy with some chocolate covered strawberries but in my head I thought, "he'll forget". Shame on me, not only did he get them but he hand dipped them himself PLUS he sprinkled them with festive Valentine's Day sprinkles. They were so pretty not to mention DELISH! He didn't just buy the kind of chocolate for dipping in the little container all ready to go, he melted milk chocolate in a pan the old fasioned way on the stove top. Thing is, he decided to move my cake out of the way earlier so he stuck it in the oven. It was really cold and rainy on Valentine's Day and he got cold so turned on the oven FULL BLAST to warm him up while he was dipping the strawberries. Yeah, he totally forgot about the cake in the oven....until smoke started pouring out of the oven and the smoke alarm blared. When I walked in the door from work, it smelled like the recent wild fires all over again. Guess we didn't really need the cake, did we?

Oh, and I got Scott and Noah each a little Valentine's bag filled with their favorite treats.

OUR TRIP TO DISNEYLAND

We had a great time at Disneyland. It's hard to believe that Noah is now 9 1/2 years old and this was his very FIRST trip to Disneyland....EVER! What kind of a mother am I? Actually, Noah would probably tell you it was well worth the wait to share the experience with his little brother. My mom was a great help with the baby which made it much more enjoyable and less hectic for me and Scott. By the end of the day we were ALL thoroughly exhausted.

I know, I'm long overdue in updating the blog. But jeez, where does the time go? First, it's Halloween and next thing ya know we're right in the heart of the Christmas season and there's just no time.

Here are SOME updates but there's still more coming so be sure to check back soon. Within the next day I hope to have our Disneyland pictures posted. We also have pictures of Ryan sitting up and his 2 new teeth that we'll have up soon.

This was the first year in as long as I can remember that I didn't even send out Christmas cards. In November, Scott and Noah and I all got sick with the flu/cold bug. It was nearly 3 weeks before we were all back to normal again and we couldn't believe Ryan never got sick. What a trooper! But then, on Saturday, Dec. 22nd he came down with a cold and for about 5 days straight we somehow managed to exist on only 3-4 hours of sleep each night. Poor thing couldn't even sleep he was so uncomfortable. Then on Christmas Eve, I got sick and on Christmas night Scott started to get it too. What a mess we were. I took Ryan to the doctor finally on Dec. 27th because he just wasn't getting any better and we HAD to get some sleep. We were delirious not to mention sick ourselves. Turns out, he was at the beginning stage of an ear infection. After only a couple days of antibiotics he's already feeling MUCH better.

Now that we're getting all of this sickness out of our system we hope to start the New Year healthy and on track for a great new year. We wish you all the same. Happy New Year!!!

When I took the pictures of Noah (just below) under the tree behind our patio a few days ago it reminded me of something I wrote back in September of 1994 about Fall. At the time, I was in my 20's, working very hard and still learning about being an adult and dealing with not so fun responsibilities. At the same time, I recalled how different life was growing up, especially in Ohio and obviously really missing the seasons at the same time but especially Fall.

Fall...More Than A Season

Fall is more than just a season. It is a memory reminiscent of part of what I essentially know as home.
The fresh clean smell in the air and the rustling of the falling leaves seems to be prompting us for change. It is the calm before the storm. Fall is the end, yet the beginning. The reds, oranges, yellows and greens of the tree's leaves line the streets of neighborhoods and fill the hollow woods. The leaves loosen themselves ever so gently from the trees and slowly float freely to the cool ground.
The kids rake piles of leaves and arduously climb the nearest tree in anticipation of plummeting into the crisp abundant piles of color. I can still smell the leaves as I did many years ago as a little girl, burying myself in the freshly raked pile of fall.
To me, fall is a concept. Not a place or a time but a state of mind. Fall is a resting period, a preparation of the months to come and a time of recollection.
I am an adult, burdened with the responsibilities of everyday life. I sip hot cider and watch children enjoy the season. And I am an eight year old little girl in the country running in the front yard and throwing myself carelessly in the fall leaves.

Noah and his flag football team just before their first game on Tuesday, October 30th. They lost by 1 touchdown but it was a great game. His friend, Justin to Noah's right is the quarterback and Noah is running back. Noah is an absolute maniac out on the field and afterwards told us, "I think I found my sport".

Back yard patio decorations by Scott. I didn't get a picture of him in his costume but he dressed up as the scary clown from the movie IT and let me tell you, "IT" was not pretty. He wore his costume when he took the kids trick or treating and got all kinds of comments and sideways glances, which he LOVED.

Look at the leaves all over the ground. I LOVED it...considering we live in San Diego, we're not suppose to have seasons here. Although, it was about 80 degrees that day.

This was actually a couple days before Halloween but I had to get one of Ryan in there so here he is hanging out on the couch with Daddy, probably wondering what all of this nonsense is really about.

Carving the pumpkin...I tried to get everything organized and to make it as simple and UNmessy as possible but a mess is just inevitable when it comes to this.

The finished product...a headless horseman. Can you see it? Scott helped Noah carve the pumpkin with one of those stencil kits. It was very cool but a total time bandit....took a WHILE.

Pumpkin seeds....yum they turned out so good. Clean seeds & dry then saute in butter and lawry's seasoning salt then bake in the oven for 30 minutes. This one will definitely become a new tradition for us.

THE PUMPKIN PATCH!!!

Oh how we love this time of year! Halloween is so much fun but, for us, I think it's the time of year (Fall) that we really look forward to and enjoy. Aside from Christmas time, this has always been me & Scott's favorite time of year for as long as we can remember.
Last night we visited the pumpkin patch and the kids had tons of fun. My mom (aka "G"-Ma) and nephew, Bradley (aka "B"-Rad) were visiting from Orange County so they joined us. There was a bounce house, corn maze (Scott was a little baffled that he and the boys actually almost got LOST in the maze), hay rides (but we got there too late), animals and lots of fun props and fall decorations. Noah and Bradley each picked out a pumpkin and we could NOT help but take advantage of the great photo opportunity to dress up Ryan for the occassion, I might add...in his VERY SCARY costume (see photos below).

You CANNOT be a Seubert if you aren't a football fan. That's just the way it is. Scott is definitely the ring leader but as you can see, the boys are following suit. Scott...and his entire family are HUGE Chicago Bears fans but you can't live in San Diego and not be a Chargers fan too. This picture was taken on September 9th...1st game of the Season. Chargers vs. the Bears. One of Scott's friends who came over to watch the game with us brought Ryan this chargers jersey outfit. Noah got his jersey last year for Christmas. Noah is such a loyal Chargers fan that he wore his jersey for school pictures this year.

BACK TO SCHOOL AND BACK TO WORK

It's hard to believe it's that time of year again...back to school. Noah started his 4th grade year on Wednesday, August 15th. He's glad to have a man for a teacher again (had a man in 2nd grade too). We've already had back to school night and everything...crazy, huh? Scott just signed Noah up for a Pop Warner flag football league and Noah is REALLY excited about that. I tried to talk him into baseball but after 2 years in little league he says he's ready to move on to a different sport. Stay tuned for more updates on THAT.

This was also the day that I went back to work after more than a 3 month long maternity leave. In some ways I was ready to get back to work again but it was still really hard leaving Ryan that morning. I thought I was totally fine...until I ran into a neighbor on the way to my car. She said "awwwwwww, is today the first day back?". I tried to tell her that I couldn't talk about it but instead I turned into a sobbing mess. She hugged me and I fell apart even more. Thank God for my sister-in-law Sheri (Scott's sister). She comes to the house every day and takes care of the baby for us...even goes to Noah's school in the afternoon to pick up Noah and bring him home, which works GREAT. I have to say...I DO NOT KNOW how those stay at home moms do it. Seriously!!! I use to think it would be such a luxury to stay home and not have to work but I'm telling you, being a stay at home mom is the toughest job out there. If you're not really organized and on the ball, before you know it it's 3:00 p.m. and your not even dressed or showered and it feels like NOTHING has been done all day yet your feet are KILLING you from running around and doing STUFF all day long.

I'm not sure why Scott titled the Vegas video "Vegas Grandpa" but I think he meant to do that more as a point of reference for himself in recovering his video on our computer rather than intending that for the true title of the blog. It's okay though, he still did a great job on the video. What's kind of comical about the whole thing is that some of the comments we got referred to my Dad as "Grandpa Vegas" so I think people may actually think we call my dad that because of Scott's choice of title. Too funny! So....Dad....what do you think about THAT? Grandpa Vegas does have kind of a unique ring to it don't ya think?

I thought it would be fun to start a blog cause it makes keeping in touch with family & friends, sending updated pictures of the kidlets, etc. so much easier than sending multiple emails. We all know what a pain it is sometimes to open and view multiple pictures via email. I hope you like our blog. I'll try to be good and update it frequently...at least once a month (I hope) with new pictures and updates so be sure to check back. It's nice to be home all summer while on maternity leave...although it has been very hectic adjusting to the life and schedule (or lack thereof) of a newborn again. Ryan is finally starting to ALMOST sleep through the night so that helps a LOT with my sanity. He is now 2 months old and is smiling and showing off his dimples constantly. It's a lot of fun seeing his little personality start to develop. Noah turned 9 on May 15th. He absolutely adores his new little brother and is really a great big brother. If you REALLY want to see the baby smile and get excited, you should see how he comes alive when Noah talks and sings to him. Ryan just lights up and LOVES when his big brother dotes on him.Scott's parents and our nephew, Tyler, just flew home to Missouri after visiting for a couple weeks. It was nice to see them again and get to spend some time with them as we don't get to see them very often. They were really happy to meet their new grandson and spend time with him as well. We've got some pictures below of them seeing Ryan for the first time.
